Screech Owl

Here is another drawing from my "Birds of Pray" Predator Drone series. This is a sweet little screech owl in process. I am using sepia for these bird drawings but the sepia is not as brown as I would like...

Lucy Vincent Beach

This is Lucy Vincent Beach here on Martha's Vineyard. This particular cliff has undergone some major changes after Hurricane Sandy and some severe winter storms.

Greeting Cards

June is a big birthday month in my family. These are the birthday cards...

It's 2013, not 2012!

I am not sure what happens to my brain when I get up here on MV, but for some reason I put 2012 in the title of this blog and I can't seem to change it. Time flies when you are having fun!

Heavy Weather Ahead

Battening down the hatches here on the Island. Tropical Storm Andrea is bearing down here. Hoping we don't lose power. Kimball Cottage is on a high hill where the wind really blows hard. I think I will run over to the beach to see some big waves. Meanwhile the rain pours down, but it is nice and snug here in the cottage.

Outdoor oven at Polly Hill

This is a huge outdoor oven at Polly Hill Arboretum. The yellow lichen on the stonework is an inspiring shade of mustardy yellow.

West Meadow Sign

The sign to West Meadow, painted by Katherine Urban in need of a touch up. Some pranksters stole the sign one summer but it was luckily recovered in the garbage at the Chilmark Store.

Polly Hill Arboretum

Yesterday a friend and I visited the Polly Hill Arboretum, a truly special and beautiful spot here on Martha's Vineyard. Shown above is a Japanese Starwood Dogwood.

Stunning Mountain Laurel

"The Polly Hill Arboretum, a Martha’s Vineyard horticultural and botanical landmark, was developed by the legendary horticulturist, Polly Hill (1907-2007). Here in 1958, Polly began an arboretum by sowing a seed, eventually bringing 20 acres under cultivation while preserving 40 additional acres as native woodland. Established in 1998 as a not-for-profit institution the Arboretum is devoted to the cultivation and study of plants and the preservation of the character and magic of this tranquil landscape."

West Meadow Bouquet

I spend a lot of time here arranging flowers. This is the early summer version with Star Dogwood, wild daisies, catmint, chive flowers, white lilac, mint, and hydrangea all from meadow properties. Behind the bouquet is a print of Alan Whiting's painting of the Menemsha Coast Guard boathouse.

West Meadow Neighbor

Just down the meadow is the home of the Chilmark Writing Workshop run by Nancy Aronie. Nancy is the author of "Writing from the Heart." The workshop runs in summer from Monday-Thursday, 9:00-12:00 in Nancy's beautiful yard and studio. I have written at this workshop for many years. It is a unique and beautiful experience and I highly recommend it!

Vibrant stones

I love the vibrant colors of these wet stones at sunset.

Sunset Flowers

I am not positive of the official name for these pretty flowers that blossom on the beach at sunset.

Lobsterville Sunset

A ridiculously beautiful sunset. The air was scented with beach plum roses, blackberries, sunset flowers and the salty tang of the sea. I could hear the fisherman's rods snap as they cast out in the calm.

Studio Set-up

This is my studio set-up. I have a beautiful view of the meadow and the birdbath. The birds keep me company during the day when I am working.

Cicada Drawing

In honor of the 17 year emergence of the cicadas, I created this drawing of a "Cicada Drone."

Farmer West

This is "Chilmark Hay," by Thomas Hart Benton.
Benton painted this view of West Meadow in 1951. It is called West Meadow for Farmer West. I am staying in the Kimball cottage and this is the view from the cottage, circa 1951.

Here's the current view:
